Are public-private partnerships beneficial in a world as corrupt as now?
My vote is NO (Against the statement)
A Public-Private Partnership is established by the government in order to lower the financial burden upon them. Not everything can be sponsored by the government yet, it’s their duty to satisfy the needs of the public.
So, they approach the private companies in order to fund their projects. The government pays the private companies, as promised by the contract signed between them, after the project is completed.
In a world as corrupt as now, the government might not have negotiated for the risks and burdens, that the future of the project holds. And if the project fails to reach the required demand, all the expense is transferred onto the private companies. The contract is not fulfilled from the government’s side and the company loses a hefty amount to build something that has no use anymore.
The private companies may ensue extra taxes and rents on the public that uses these facilities in order to make more money. Thereafter, looting the middle class public in a cruel way. The public has no other option but to pay that extra sum, if they want to use the facility.
One of the public private company example is GMERS colleges in Gujarat. It provides the medical degree to thousands of students but also has its own drawbacks, like besides ensuing the admission fees, the hostel fees, mess fees etc. is also extracted from students by the institution.
Another example can be of a road construction that has been a public-private partnership. If the road leads to faulty construction, all the blame comes upon the private company, as it was them who took under the job of construction. Also, if any life is lost in this incident, again, the private companies are responsible.
So somewhere, both the sides, the government and the private company may end up being false and in the end, the public suffers.
Hence the public-private partnerships are NOT beneficial in a world as corrupt as now.
