Perfume

Perfume         - Patrik Suskind Long ago, when I was doomed by facts of science and my imagination was on the verge of collapseing, I found a character named Jhon Baptist , written by some drunk German author named Patrick Suskund. His imagination smelled foul to me and his character smelled nothing like a human! A character with supernatural olfactory senses yet having no smell sounds like a canvas to me. I can imagine that character as a blank canvas in an art gallery, initially felt strange but at the end it turned out exactly someone from my imagination, a guy brought up in tough conditions or who survived in a dark part of history and came out as a greedy man, sounds so humanly to me. Those drunk word were just glorifying that character but it felt okay because story ends with so many dead people, who just had some extra ordinary human smell and yeah, some peaches also. I expect that writer to be drunk or to be crazy else it would have been just a wasted though...

Being a female in the then male dominated field, she is extremely competitive; a straight A student, not known to show much emotion. Being shoved in the real hospital world unprepared, she enco...

Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death and Sleepless Nights in a Surgeon's First Years

Hot Lights, Cold Steel: Life, Death and Sleepless Nights in a Surgeon's First Years            - Dr. Micheal J. Collins It is a book by Dr. Micheal J. Collins and talks of his  experiences gained  in the Orthopedics Residency. The story is special and we need to preserve all the experience mentioned . His experience,  exciting, thrilling, disappointing at times and at other, mind numbing for what just happened and how he feels about it. The narration is as dynamic and emotions- provoking as though we are reading fiction. Yet, the whole course of story is so real in experiencing.  It is really relatable for the medical students as such is let me mention here, I feel like it is a must read ! Just a few days back, when we were having a session on instruments used in ENT surgeries, I don't know from where the conversation arise but I got especially conscious when the conversation sounded like,  "Why do you think its called a cold surger...

The Inheritance Games

The Inheritance Games          - Jennifer Lynn Barnes How many of you would sell your soul to become a millionaire for just one day? Here we have Avery Grambs, inheriting each and every penny from a multi billionaire with no ties to her. Easy going book which races your heart and leaves you to yearn for more. An orphan girl, a messy family with huge, mind blowing secrets, a steaming love triangle, cliffhangers,  tragic past, a mystery to solve with billions at stake. All the characters (especially male leads) hold a  special place in my heart for which I would die for. (Ps: they come at par with BTS members ) Although, the second book’s ending was not what I yearned for, but here I am sitting on the edge of my seat and waiting for the third part. A compelling storyline with secrets at every nook and corner. If given the choice of erasing the storyline from my head and re reading it, then I am up for it!!              ...

Chanakya's Chant

Chanakya's Chant           - by Ashwin Sanghi Goodreads rating – 3.73/5 Chanakya’s Chant - another novel by Ashwin Sanghi in his Bharat Series is the story of Pandit Gangasagar Mishra, set along with the storyline of Chanakya (340BC). Pandit Gangasagar Mishra is an ambitious person who wishes to see a united better Bharat in modern times. A very nicely plotted brain wrecking historical (political) fiction. Political tactics used by Pandit Gangasagar and of course Chanakya leaves one speechless. Reality of today's world - corruption, greed, class hatred (nothing better than ancient time), etc is very well portrayed. Its a page turner and left me stunned almost the whole time. Both the timelines are very nicely narrated and related. Filled with many savage quotes, a must read for political lovers and even if u aren't it won't disappoint you.              - by Margi Shah   (houseofbooks)       ...

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo         - Taylor Jenkins Reid Goodreads rating: 4.48 Set in 1950s Hollywood era, this is a story of Evelyn Hugo, a successful film icon, reciting her life story to Monique, a journalist going through a rough breakup. This book sets apart the differences in the life of film actor in terms of what it actually is and what people believe it to be. It also shows the prejudices a woman in 1950s faced while working in a male dominated industry, breaking the then “normal” norms and emerging as a successful icon who became role model to many. While working with Evelyn, Monique realizes that happiness of a woman is not entitled, or limited to the opposite gender. It made her look her life from a different perspective and helped her in more ways than she could imagine, so she could jumpstart her newfound life with confidence. All for the Game Series

All for the Game Series        - Nora Sakavic The book is a sports thriller with a pinch of LGBTQ+ and a bunch of traumatized kids. This book has a little bit of everything for all YA fiction lovers. The sports theme didn't sound too appealing to me in the beginning but soon the Exy became my new Quidditch. It, being a co-ed sport, made it more interesting. Despite the writing style being a bit off and amateur, all the characters are quite well-written. It leaves you with no choice but to want to know more about them even after the novels end. The novel revolves around Neil Josten and his teammates, who are all just teenagers with broken childhoods. So the team has its fair share of problems with teamwork and hence winning matches. But that all obviously changes as the story goes on. My personal favourite character was Andrew because who doesn't love a sassy, psychologically damaged, emotionally unhinged character with some anger issues in the fictional world. (Yeah,...

The Outsiders

The Outsiders              -S.E Hinton The Outsiders is a heartfelt ‘coming of age’ tale narrated through the eyes of an innocent fourteen-year old boy, Ponyboy Curtis. The book is set against the backdrop of the blood-curdling rivalry within the two segments of the story’s-crafted society, the Greasers and the Socs. The Socs are the rich and spoiled kids, whilst the Greasers are the poverty-stricken ones and who are presumed to be bad. The story lifts differences hidden within one’s social status, how one can take a lifetime growing up or you might grow up with a snap of a finger, finding who you are, and what it means to revolt against the mundane norms. The protagonist, a silent voice with the loud mind - a greaser, a diligent and meticulous student, feels like he is submerged under immense pressure.  The Greasers are more than just plain friends: they are an entwined unit, like blood brothers and sisters. ‘The gang’ as they call themselve...

Ambedkar's India

Ambedkar's India             - Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Ambedkar's India is a collection of three of B.R. Ambedkar's most prominent speeches on caste and the Indian Constitution.  'The Grammar Of Anarchy'  reflects how diverse this country is, what Dr. Ambedkar wanted for the people of this country, how far sighted he was and tells us how difficult it was to implement the constitution. Well, we clearly see how it's being tampered with these days;  Courtesy: The ruling party, So I think I understand what he meant. 'Annihilation Of Caste', B.R. Ambedkar's most famous speech which brings out how caste system in India works and how deep rooted it is in our culture. He even goes on to criticize Hinduism and takes a dig at the religious texts which he feels are male centric suppress the voices of the female counterparts. 'Castes In India: Their Mechanism, Genesis And Development' which I felt is an eye opener. Here, he shares his research about how caste...

Complications

Complications         - Atul Gawande A Letter to all Medicos - Complications and what not ! The title is very formal sounding, but this post isn’t gonna be that way as the subtitle gave away. Coz, it’s a struggle for me to be formal. But more importantly because sometimes when I read formal, I get zoned out or bored or just feel normal human stuff. So, this is like a literary conversation. (*is that a thing? Can you say literary conversation? In this context? I dont know. Just stay with me. This gets better…hopefully?*) Basically, I’m talking to you in here. So, Let’s talk about books! (*exclamation mark to sound excited*) When I read “Books” on the Students@BMC story, I got really excited. Then a second later, I got very confused. (*these mood swings, I tell you!*) But, It’s really tough to choose, right? Should I talk about fiction? Non-fiction? A classic? Medical? Not-at-all medical? But as I sat to write, I remembered George RR Martin saying: A reader live...
